The decision to purchase a plot of land to build a Town Hall with an administrative wing and a Theatre (commonly called the ‘Plaza’) was taken in 1927. The actual purchase was effected in 1928 and the foundation stone laid on 5 March 1929 by the Governor’s wife, Lady Read.
The inauguration was effected on 27 May 1933 by the then Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Hon. Alfred Geut. In 1934 the Theatre was leased to a cinema company which named it “Plaza”.
The second floor of the Theatre was used by the Mauritius Broadcasting Service (MBS) during the World War II.
The Theatre was renovated in 1981 and 1994.
Now, it will undergo major renovation works anew. The contract for consultancy has already been awarded to Ramphul Associates and their teams.
