The former Municipal Slaughter House at Stanley, Rose Hill, has been converted into a modern multi-purpose Arts, Culture and Sports complex - known as Quorum.
The plan for converting this ex-Slaughter House, built in 1929 under the supervision of the Former Town Architect, Georges Randabel, as well as one among the most magnificent and historical buildings of the Island, was designed by Forges Tardieu. Marvelously constructed with freestones and bearing a sparkling metal roof, the building reflects the masterpiece of Mauritian architecture. It is considered as a patrimonial heritage, just as the Government House of Mauritius and the Theatre.
The Quorum is situated in the middle of Abattoir Road, now Ratsitatane Road, Rose Hill, over an area of about 8322 square feet. It is surrounded by a spacious green field, which makes it most suitable for the running of sporting activities, with its historical background remaining unchanged.
Inaugurated in 1991, the Quorum is considered as the top gymnasium of the island. In its major hall of 992 square metres such disciplines as Handball, Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, Boxing and Wrestling are practiced. One additional room is used for other activities. The other facilities include a cafeteria, an office, a projection cabin, sauna and space for accommodating media representatives.
The existing forms of infrastructure at the Quorum, which has a capacity of 430 seats, help promote sports, culture and art in the town, as well as the organisation of international sporting competition.
