The Sir Gaetan Duval Stadium, which is of national importance, was constructed in 1957. It is the first in Mauritius to have been provided with a cinder track, since 1972. Until recently, all the most important national athletic competitions were organised there.
Previously, the place now occupied by the Sir Gaetan Duval Stadium was a cemetery. The necessary conversion was made possible following a special decree of the Droit Canon of the Roman Catholic Church. The wrought iron cross and parts of the skeleton collected from the various tombs were deposited in the yard of the St Ignace Parsonage.
